"Keep Student-ing!"

College is hard. I don’t think that there is a student or professor on this campus that will tell you otherwise. While most students stress over grades, time management, and lack of money - there there are some really awesome things about being in school! One thing that was brought to my attention this week is that not everyone gets a chance to go to college or even to consider following their dream. So as you go through your week, I’d like you all to consider my list of reasons why college is AMAZING.

  1. You are extremely lucky to have received the opportunity to go to a university - and most people probably had to make a difficult choice between many schools!

  2. You learn a lot about yourself as an individual, a student, and a future [insert desired career here].

  3. You have a lot of freedom. As very young adults, we get the chance to live “on our own” with a lot of great supports around us (like Residence Life, friends, and our families back home).

  4. You get the chance to meet and connect with people from literally across the world! While some of my best friends in college live a few hours from my home town - I’ve met friends from places like Japan, Korea, Texas, Finland (I miss Iida!) and Oregon.

  5. While it may not always be at the forefront of your mind - you are surrounded by professors who want to see you succeed… both in their classroom and in the future!

  6. We’re at this awkwardly amazing point where we feel like students AND teachers. (especially those of us who are in their last semester of classes... *eek!!*)

This last point brings me to my favorite YouTuber, the Kid President. On a Wednesday morning, this goofy guy gave me motivation to get up, be thankful for the opportunity to go to class, and to keep learning! As the title of my blog suggests, I believe that learning should extend way beyond the typical classroom years. To be successful in life we’ve constantly got to keep learning about the world and people around us, and apply it in a positive ways that others can see and learn from too! Whether or not you are in a classroom, and no matter what you plan on doing after college, it's important to know "what are you teaching the WORLD?"

I think this is such a great reminder and reality check for us as college students. While it is easy to say we had a hard week or have a hard week coming up and we don't feel like dealing with our responsibilities or the stress, it is really important we remember just how blessed we are to have this opportunity. I love the optimism in this blog and the daily reminders to think twice about being negative about an awesome experience!

The feeling is too real. I keep remembering in just a couple short months that I will be joining a classroom for student teaching and the end of college is very near. Reality has been setting in that after that I will be expected to search for a real grown-up job and that can be nerve-wracking. It's good to follow this post and keep your feet on the ground and head above the water.

In the midst of everything that we deal with as college students, especially as we near exams, this is very important to keep in mind. I love the positivity of your posts and this one really inspired me to give a more positive mindset a good try!
